The Land of the Rising Sun over Cork! We'll be guided through a selection of whiskies by the Brand Ambassador for Nikka.
The history of Japanese whisky is dominated by Masataka Taketsuru who born into a sake-brewing dynasty found himself packed off to university in Scotland tasked with learning the secrets of Scotch Whisky. He ended up in Longmorn Distillery near Elgin where he got his first introduction to whisky making. Perfecting his skills with an apprenticeship in Hazelburn distillery he returned to Japan in 1920 with his Scottish wife and his hard earned whisky expertise. He teamed up with Shinjiro Torii to start the Japanese whisky industry with the first distillery Yamazaki which is owned by Suntory Ltd.
In 1934 Taketsuru created his own company, Dainipponkaju Company Ltd, later renamed to Nikka Whisky Distilling in 1952 and it is from this stable of distilleries that we will sample from particularly the whiskies produced at Yoichi (Hokkaido) and Miyagikyo (Honshu).
Yochi Distillery was the first distillery started by Taketsuru and Miyagikyo was the second distillery. The styles of whisky produced by both distilleries is quite different so we will explore what causes the distinct tastes with a guided evening which is sure to educate.
As our tasting events are normally fully booked out, if you are unable to attend the event please inform us as soon as possible so that we may allocate the space to individuals who may be on a waiting list.
Photographs/video may be taken on the night for future use in promoting the Irish Whiskey Society
