The Irish Whiskey Society is delighted to invite you to an extraordinary and historic evening as we partner with Ireland's oldest independent, family-owned wine and spirit merchant: Mitchell & Son.
For over 220 years, the Mitchell family has been a pillar of Dublin’s spirit trade. Established in 1805 by William Henry Mitchell as a confectionery and tearoom at 10 Grafton Street, they earned a Royal Warrant as confectioners to Queen Victoria in 1850. By 1887, the family expanded into wine importing and whiskey bonding from their premises at 21 Kildare Street and cellars beneath Fitzwilliam Lane. Sending empty fortified wine casks across the city to the Bow Street Jameson Distillery, they filled them with pure pot still spirit and returned them to mature under the cobbled streets of Dublin. Marked with iconic daubs of coloured paint—Blue (7yo), Green (10yo), Yellow (12yo), and Red (15yo)—the legendary Spot Whiskeys were born.
As a Society dedicated to the celebration of Irish whiskey history, this event represents a true milestone. Mitchell & Son single-handedly kept the flame of Single Pot Still whiskey alive through the difficult decades of the 20th century when the style was almost completely lost across the island. This tasting is a celebration of that shared passion, resilience, and enduring legacy.
We are highly privileged to be joined on the night by Mitchell & Son Director Robet Mitchell, who will guide our Society through a masterclass of their legendary range.
While we gather in the atmospheric, historic brick-arched vaults of Mitchell & Son's Harcourt Street cellar, the focus of our evening remains on our Society's shared exploration of these magnificent whiskeys and the living heritage that unites us.
